Off to Shriners!

Madi stamping paper.... well, she was supposed to be stamping paper...

Today Madi and I are off to Shriners in LA for an evaluation.  We are leaving for the airport in about an hour, will be staying at the Ronald McDonald house in LA, and will be returning tomorrow night.  We would appreciate prayers for a safe journey and will update when we get home.  Thanks!

Hi Jaime, I just stumbled across your blog from the article you wrote about hospital stay tips on breastfeedbabywear... I happened to find out yesterday that my 8 month old son, Gabriel will require surgery within the next 3 months to correct cryptorchidism. While it is difficult to imagine my little one going under general anesthetic and enduring a little laparoscopic day surgery, what made me worry the most was the fact that he will have to fast for a certain amount of time. I thought, "If I can't nurse him, how can I mother him? How can I comfort him in a strange place without nursing?" I was glad to see that point addressed here, and it's good to know that maybe I do have options. It was the surgeon himself who said that if we don't obey the NPO, they will cancel the surgery. But he didn't tell me how many hours. 12 hours sounds like eternity, but 4 hours would likely be do-able! I hope they will make concessions for my breastfed baby. Who do you think I would have to ask about that? Head of urology? By the way, your Madi is wonderful! I loved your walking and riding videos :) Go Madi! ~Blessings to you and your family ~ Cindy

Cindy, I tried to find your e-mail address, but can't, so I hope you see this! I would for sure call ahead and talk to the department doing the surgery and ask what their standard prcedure is. Then, if you have a concern with it, I'd get your data (find out what the la leche league say, etc...) and call and talk to the person who will be doing the surgery direction. If you get their approval, then you are golden! I'd just say you have done your research about the topic and throw out the facts you know. You can also print documents on the topic and bring them with you, just in case. I always had them bookmarked on my laptop, so that they were easily accessable. My laptop came with me to the hospital, and if anyone were to argue, I'd planned on showing them. Thankfully that was never necessary. Make sure that you specify for breastmilk, not formula, since there are different times. Good luck with everything and please LMK if I can help at all!
